House. c1450 with later additions. W half of jettied range,
timber-framed and plastered, coved eaves, peg-tiled roof. Plan
T-shaped. Street range and rear timber-framed wing with later
lean-to addition on E side overlapping with No.11 (qv). 2
storeys and cellar.
Front S elevation: continuous jetty with No.9. Details of
framing now plastered over. Ground floor rectangular bay
window with glazing bars, 1x3, 3x3, 1x3 fixed panes. Street
door to E, early C19 plain door-case, 6 panelled door, upper
panels glazed. Between door and window, moulded rail and
shutter hinge recesses on window frame for folding shutter.
First floor, two 2-light sliding sash windows with moulded
architraves, 4x3 panes. Rear, N elevation: prominent
timber-framed wing, plastered but some principal members
visible. 2 red brick stacks, one at N end of wing, one at
junction of wing and street range. Ground floor, N end, C20
door with upper glazing 4x4 panes, lower boarding. E side,
sliding sash window 4x4 panes on ground and first floor. To E,
shorter slate roofed lean-to. Single 2-light casement window
in N end wall, glazing bars, 4x3 panes.
INTERIOR: ground floor ceiling joists exposed in street range.
2 phases, to E heavy flat-laid with soffit tenons, Roman
numeral carpenters' marks. To W, slender re-used joists at
right angles to others and of late C17 type. Jowled corner
posts on first floor. Framing of rear wing ground floor studs
somewhat mixed, shutter groove in middle rail W side. First
floor tie-beam with pegs for arched braces. Principal stack at
back of street range has narrow C17 bricks where not rebuilt.
Ground floor fireplace remade in C20 with late C18 cast-iron
surround, eared architrave and Adamesque detail. Cellar
retains chute from street and simple rear window.
