House, formerly house and shop (with No.6 now included). C16
core, C17 rebuilding and extension, C20 rear addition and
refurbishment. Timber framing, plastered and later brick,
peg-tiled roofs. 2 storeys.
Front N elevation: uneven 3 window and 2 door range. Ground
floor, E-W, C20 3-light casement window, 6x3 panes replacing
shop window, old shop door, 4 recessed panels, now blocked.
Adjacent C19 house door under simple hood shared with shop
door, 4 flush panels, common steps up. Two 3-light sliding
sash windows with moulded architraves, 6x3 panes. First floor,
E-W, casement windows, one 3-light 3x2 panes, one 2-light 4x2
panes, one 4-light 4x2 panes. Wall has restored plain panel
pargetting. Stack behind roof apex at W end.
Rear S elevation: principal street range with long wing on E
end of 3 progressively lower units and internal C20 lean-to.
Principal range, ground floor, casement windows, one single
light 3x4 panes, one 3-light 3x2 panes one 2-light 2x2 panes,
also high narrow plain casement at E end. E wing, one higher
and one lower gabled unit showing wall plate and purlins with
trapping collar. Weatherboarded shed as lean-to on S end,
single storey lean-to on W side in red brick with rendered
half gable, 4x4 paned casement window below.
W side elevation: principal gable end, C20 panel pargetted.
Wing behind, to S, N-S, C20 brick lean-to with catslide roof
from C17 addition, C20 3-light casement window, 6x4 panes and
fully glazed door, 3x5 panes. Set back, C17 unit continues
ground floor brick, plastered framing above with C20 fully
glazed door and simple gabled porch with adjacent 2-light
window 2x2 and 1x2 panes. First floor, sliding sash window 4x3
panes and 2-light casement 4x3 panes. To S, lower single
storey brick and timber-framed unit with C20 boarded door and
small window of three 2x2 paned casements. Simple 3-light
fixed window above door. Weatherboarded lean-to shed. E end
elevation: to side lane, rendered but with panel of brickwork,
2x2 paned casement window above.
INTERIOR: considerably rebuilt but principal framing partly
exposed. Central cambered C16 tie-beam with associated joints
for arched braces adjacent to rebuilt stack partly of narrow
C17 bricks. Ground floor fireplace still retains original
timber lintel with compass inscribed protection symbol of 6
petals in circle at N end. W end bay ceiling joists flat laid
with centre tenons. Jowls of storey posts at rear indicate a
former C16 wing at right angles. Ceiling hook also survives
from later period for hinged shutter to street window. W end
bay also has free standing triangular plan stack with segment
arched head fireplace from earlier room. C17 E wing units have
trapped side purlin roofs. Cellar recorded in previous listing
now filled in.
