Audley Cottage
II
House. Mid C19. Flint with red brick dressings to doors,
corner quoins and banding, roofs of shaped slates. Cruciform
plan of principal block gable end to street with E side porch
and opposite side wing. 2 storeys to street, 3 storeys at
rear.
Front S elevation to street: gable end of one window range,
shaped barge-boards and finial. Ground floor window,
rectangular bay with hipped shaped tile roof, window of 3
casement lights with upper transom, glazing bars, each light
2x4 and 2x2 panes. First floor window has label and moulded
brick shallow corbel, central stile, double casement window
each casement 2x4 panes. To E, 2-storey brick porch with
ground floor segment headed window, slate roof with shaped
ridge tiles. To W, taller wing in flint with ground floor
doorway, 3 paned overlight, door has upper glazing, 2x3 panes.
Stack behind frontage on W side has pair of octagonal shafts.
Rear, N elevation: central block of 3 storeys, gables similar
to front but simpler. Ground floor and first floor windows in
house style. Garden basement walling of red brick with 2-light
casement window, each light 3x4 panes. Pair of octagonal
shafts to rear stack behind gable on W side. E side, 2-storey
porch and additional ground floor red brick lean-to with C20
single light casement window. On W side, C20 single storey
flat roofed extension projects into garden with French window
and side lights, fully glazed, 4x2x5 panes, boarded door below
in W side. E side elevation: 2 window range plus central 2
storeyed porch. Porch has shaped barge-boards and finial,
ground floor, 4-centred arched doorway. Door has 4 raised
panels. Lean-to on N side of porch clearly added. Windows all
in house style, upper pair though blind. W side elevation:
partly obscured. Central wing has shaped barge-board and
finial. Stack each side, N and S, each with pair of diagonal
shafts. First floor window in wing and S end in general house
style.
INTERIOR: essentially plain. One original arched headed
cast-iron fireplace. Original stair with turned newel post and
shaped handrail.
