Public House. Mid C16 rear wing, front block late C18. Brick,
roughcast to Market Lane. Brown brick facade. Slate roofs.
Facade of 2 storeys and dormer attic in 6 bays. Door right of
centre under round arch and a second, panelled, door to right
of elevation with 3-light overlight. Fenestration of sash
windows, the one between doors with horns. All have glazing
bars and gauged skewback arches. 2 oval advertising panels to
upper floor recommending Bullards brewery products. Gabled
roof, hipped to south. 2 sloping dormers with casements. Stack
on south slope.
2-storey wing runs east along Market Lane, the south face with
a partially blocked 11-light (eleven) ovolo mullioned timber
casement with centre transom. 2 ovolo-moulded king mullions
separate lights into 2-7-2 rhythm. Various later casements and
sashes punctuate elevation. North side has, to upper floor,
one 3-light late C18 casement and, to its right, a 6-light
ovolo-mullioned casement in a reduced opening. Gabled roof.
Rear wall of front elevation rebuilt late C20 with fletton
bricks. INTERIOR. Only partially inspected. Ground floor
opened-out in brewers' cavern manner and retains no features
of interest. Some bridging beams to first floor with mortices
for joists.
