North part of a very large C16 house arranged round a
courtyard, No.8 (qv) forming the south part, now offices.
Front range remodelled late C18.
Rendered and colourwashed brick. Slate roof to front, machine
tiles to rear, pantiles to cross wing.
Front of 2 storeys and dormer attic in 6 bays. Square carriage
passage to left. Double-leaf door right of centre flanked by 2
sashes each side with glazing bars. 6 sashes to first floor,
also with glazing bars. Timber eaves cornice below parapet.
Gabled roof with 4 flat-headed dormers fitted with 3-light
casements. Gault-brick ridge stack right of centre and
external stack to north gable.
Courtyard: Carriage passage emerges to rear under a C16
chamfered 4-centred brick arch, rendered and colourwashed. 2
bays before cross wing to south, the former with two C18
casements to first floor and 2 gabled dormers in roof. Cross
wing rebuilt mid C18: two storeys with various casements and
sashes. South side of cross wing defines courtyard and carries
datestone: T.Hendry 1761. Rear of main block illuminated
through two C20 sashes and one casement to ground floor. In
centre of first floor is a 5-light hollow-mullioned casement
in reduced opening. To its left a late C17 two-light cross
casement with leaded lights. C19 saw-toothed eaves cornice. 3
gabled dormers in roof. Late C20 third-floor extension built
over junction of cross wing and front block. INTERIOR. Retains
little of interest. Roof not inspected.
