SD4761NE DALTON SQUARE
1685-1/7/108 Balustrades around central gardens
GV II
Balustrades around the formal garden in the centre of Dalton
Square. c1905. Probably by Edward Mountford. Sandstone ashlar.
4 quadrants forming in total a broken elliptical enclosure
within the rectangle of 4 streets, mostly level but stepping
down where appropriate to fit the northwards fall of the site,
while the garden remains level. Each quadrant consists of a
cyma recta plinth, above which are 4 runs of vase balusters
between rectangular panelled piers. At each end the pier is
taller and carries a square wrought-iron torchere supporting a
lantern with an egg-shaped globe. The torcheres are absent in
early photographs of Dalton Square.
