Nos.11 AND 12
GV II
Pair of houses, now shops. Early C19, altered late C19.
Sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and gable stacks.
Double-depth plan, with a doorway and a rear wing on each
house placed together in the centre. 3 storeys, probably above
cellars, and 2 bays in each house, with a sill band on the
first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The
ground floor has been altered by the insertion of shop fronts,
but the coupled doorways remain in the centre with plain
surrounds. Recessed doors up 2 internal steps, with 6 panels,
the upper 4 with re-entrant corners, and fanlights, that to
No.11 with lozenge tracery. All the windows on the upper
floors have plain reveals. No.11 has 12-pane sashes on the
first floor, and top-hung casements above. No.12 has sashed
windows without glazing bars on both floors.
INTERIOR: No.11 has a dogleg open-string staircase with
scrolled brackets, columnar newels, 2 stick balusters per
tread, and a ramped handrail, now painted but probably of
mahogany.
