Pair of attached houses. Circa 1864. Ashlar with diamond quoins,
Welsh slate roof with coped verges, ashlar stacks. H-plan. 2
storeys with attic and basement, 4 windows. Entrance doors are to
left and right returns, doors have round arched panels and are in
moulded stone cases with Perpendicular style arched head over
fanlight and pediment with fine vine carving. Left is pair of
sashes with chamfered cases and pointed hood moulds over
Perpendicular arched openings. First floor has pair of sashes to
left and single sash to right with Perpendicular arched openings.
Stack has chamfered shoulders and dog-tooth ornament. Gabled
dormer. Front has flanking wings with Dutch gables with ballflower
ornament; 2-storey canted bays have trefoil arches to panel below
sashes with perpendicular arched openings and hood moulds; frieze
to first floor with trefoils and same sashes minus hood moulds;
parapet with pierced roundels, attic sash has pointed arch over
with trefoil in tympanum and polychrome tiles. Central windows are
paired sashes with same detail as in bays. Plain rear projecting
ashlar wings.
Interior not inspected. Place Road was laid out 1864 following the
demolition of Place House. A carefully designed unit, retaining
all of its original features externally.
