Two houses, now offices and doctors' surgery. Mid C18 with later alterations.
Brick in header bond, graduated stone slate roof. 3 storeys, 8 bays. In 5th bay,
segmental-arched carriage opening. In 2nd and 7th bays, rusticated quoined round-
arched doorways with extended voussoirs, in bay 2 (No 277) with door of 6 fielded
panels below fanlight with radial glazing bars, in bay 7 (No 280) with C20 part-
glazed door below fanlight with decorative glazing bars. On ground floor, late
C19 canted bay windows with thin pilasters with lotus capitals, modillion cornices
and lead roofs. First floor: 4-pane sash windows with flat arches. Second floor:
half-size 4-pane sash windows with shorter flat arches. Lead rainwater pipes with
decorative hopper heads at each end and to left of carriage arch. Shaped kneelers,
ashlar coping. Brick stacks at ends and between 3rd and 4th, 4th and 5th, 5th and
6th bays. The entrance to No 279 is from the archway. No 278 is not of special
interest. Rear: pantile roof. No 277 has a large C20 single-storey extension
at the rear.
