GV II
Large house, mid-late C18. Tooled ashlar with raised, V-jointed
quoins, and plinth. Pantiled roofs with stone copings. 2-storey,
5-bay centre block with 1-storey, 1-bay set-back quadrant links to
lower 2-storey, 3-bay end pavilions. Main block: wide steps to
central enclosed Tuscan porch with door of ornamental fielded panels.
Replaced sash windows in raised surrounds with projecting cills;
those on ground floor and at first floor centre have triple keystones,
the latter rising into a deep moulded eaves cornice. Swept eaves;
end chimneys with cornices and strings. At either side large console
brackets ease the transition to one-bay links. These and the outer
pavilions have similar window detail but plain 6-panel central doors
and no porches. (The right pavilion is a kitchen wing). Hipped
roofs, central stacks with cornices and strings.
Interior: good woodwork includes doors with deeply-fielded panels
in enriched architraves, staircase with turned balusters and ramped
handrail. The left pavilion has been converted to a ballroom,
probably in early C20.
