Former farmhouse. Mid C18, raised c.1800. Red brick in English garden wall
bond, Swithland slate roof, brick ridge and end stacks. Central staircase
plan. 3 storeys and 2 storeys and attic; 4-window range. 3-storey main
block has central 4-panel door to garden side with moulded wood surround and
segmental-arched head. 12-pane sash windows to ground and 1st floors with
segmental-arched heads and 6-pane sashes to 2nd floor with brick lintels.
Right side elevation has a 12-pane sash window to each floor, those to
ground and 1st floors with flat-arched heads, that to 2nd floor with
Segmental-arched head. Central 6-panel door has overlight and flat-arched
head. Cross windows to rear elevation, those to ground floor with flat-
arched heads, otherwise brick lintels and small, 1-light window to 1st floor
far right with brick lintel. First floor storey band to front, back and
side elevations, 2nd floor storey band to side and rear elevations but not
to garden front, Which has dentilled brick eaves. 2-storey and attic wing
to left of garden front with cross windows to ground and 1st floors with
segmental-arched heads and storey band continuing that to main block.
Further 2 storey and attic wing projects to rear, which has back door to
right side and 3-light casement windows to ground and 1st floors of this
side, all with segmental-arched heads. Cat-slide roof to left side.
Interior: Kitchen has pump with timber housing and lead trough and spout
dated 1760 with initials M/IM, signed Jn/MARRIOT/MELTON/PLUMBER on a scroll
between two pedestals on which two putti stand covering their genitals.
Kitchen has brick floor, ogee stop-chamfered beams and bread oven. Cast-
iron grates of c.1800 to four 1st floor rooms with Prince of Wales feathers.
Dog-leg back stair with stick balusters. Queen post roof to main range,
collar truss roof to wing.
