House, now 2 dwellings. Mid C18 with C17 origins and C19
alterations. Coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar
dressings; stone slate hipped roof to main range; ashlar left-
and right-end stacks.
Palladian villa with lower flanking wings; that to right now
separate dwelling, No.40. Earlier range to rear makes centre
portion double-pile plan.
Main portion (No.42) is 3-storey 3-window range. First floor
has three C19 6/1-pane sashes; three 3/3-pane sashes above.
Two 6/6-pane sashes in moulded stone architraves to ground
floor. C19 nine-panel door with top 3 panels glazed under
single-pane overlight in moulded stone doorcase with pediment
supported on moulded brackets to centre.
Rusticated quoins to ground floor left and right angles; plat
band over ground floor. First floor cill band now cut through
by lengthened windows; cill band to second floor windows.
Moulded stone cornice and coped parapet.
Wing to left (also No.42) is 2-storey 2-window range; first
floor has 2 blind openings; blind doorway and pair of C20
garage doors to ground floor. Cill band to first floor; blind
oculus in implied open pediment formed by raking cornice.
Parapet with moulded stone coping.
Similar wing to right (No.40) is 2-storey 3-window range;
three C20 two-light timber casements to first floor; one
similar window to ground floor and one 3-light casement in
late C18/early C19 round-headed opening with blind upper part
with intersecting glazing bars.
6-panel door with upper 2 panels glazed. Cill band to first
floor; blind oculus in implied open pediment formed by raking
cornice. Parapet with moulded stone coping. No.40 rebuilt late
C20 behind front wall.
INTERIOR of No.42 much altered C19 and C20. Mid-late C17 range
to rear has plastered beams with broad chamfers and run out
stops with broad nick. C18 chimneypieces in second floor left
and right rooms; C19 marble chimneypiece in first floor right
room; all with C19 Gothic grates.
