Formerly known as: The Beeches BEECHES ROAD.
House, now community centre. Late C18, early and mid C19 and
early C20. Garden front is stucco with ashlar dressings with
coursed squared limestone to right, road front coursed squared
limestone; garden front has concrete tile roof, road front has
stone slate roof; left- and right-end stacks to garden front,
ashlar ridge stack with moulded top to porch on road front,
similar stack to rear of wing.
C18 and early C19 range to garden front has mid C19 addition
in Tudor style to rear and wing to rear right forming road
front; further additions to right of garden front C19 and
early C20 produce large building of irregular plan.
Garden front has late C18 pedimented section to centre which
is 3-storey, 4-window range; first floor has four 6/6-pane
sashes in plain reveals with stone cills, 3 similar windows to
second floor, opening to second floor right has pair of C20
fire escape doors, ground floor has three similar 6/6-pane
sashes and 8-panel round-headed door in flat beaded surround
to left; band course over ground and first floors, coped
pediment.
Early C19 wing to left of garden front is 2-storey one-window
range; first floor has one 2/2- 6/6- 2/2-pane triple sash with
moulded timber mullions, one similar window to ground floor;
shallow plinth; cill band to first floor; moulded eaves
cornice breaking forward over pilasters to left and right,
blocking course.
To right of garden front 3-storey one-window range, probably
early C19, has one 6/6-pane sash in plain reveal to first
floor left side and early C20 oriel window to first floor;
early C20 two-storey one-window range to far right has gable
facing.
Mid C19 road front in Tudor style has gabled 2-storey porch to
right, one gable and one gablet to wing to left. 2-storey,
2-window range; first floor has one 2-light chamfered stone
mullion-and-transom window with hoodmould to porch, similar
2-light chamfered stone mullion window to left, 2 similar
2-light windows to ground floor, porch to right has pair of
doors each of 8 panels with 4-centred arched head recessed
behind moulded surround with 4-centred arched head with carved
spandrels and hoodmould continued over flanking single-light
windows with 4-centred arched heads; shallow plinth with
chamfered top; moulded string over ground floor; keyed blind
oval window in gable of porch, porch has corbelled-out
kneelers and coped gable with elaborate finial at apex.
Wing to left of road front has 2-storey bay with coped parapet
with 5-light chamfered stone mullion windows to ground and
first floors, similar 2-light window to first floor right.
Moulded strings over ground and first floors; gable and gablet
have moulded coping and finials at apex. Left side of wing in
similar style; flush quoins to external angles of mid C19
ranges.
INTERIOR has late C18/early C19 stick baluster well staircase
with mahogany grip handrail from ground to first floor, late
C18 carved timber chimneypiece in staircase hall, late C18
carved stone chimneypiece to first floor right on garden
front, early C19 stone fireplaces to 2 second floor rooms to
centre of garden front, 2 further C19 fireplaces to second
floor, one to first floor in wing to right; rooms to ground
and first floor left and first floor right of garden front
retain early C19 and late C18 panelled doors, architraves,
window joinery and skirtings, ground and first floor left have
later C19 fireplaces, to first floor with elaborate floral
decoration.
Wing to road front has mid C19 fireplace with overmantel and
plaster cornices to ground and first floor rooms. Late C19
back staircase.
Attached garden wall is coursed squared limestone with plinth
and ashlar coping approximately 2m high near house with coping
ramped up over round-headed opening with C20 iron gate,
ramping down to approximately 1.6m high, coursed squared
limestone rubble with ashlar coping. House converted to
community centre 1946.
