Farmhouse. Late C15 to left; mid C16 main range, altered in later C17.
Timber framed and plastered, the framing exposed on tile facade of the main
range; pantiled roof. The earlier part comprises a 3-bay former open hall
house with a base cruck open truss and part of one other base cruck truss (cf.
Venn's Farmhouse, Earl Stonham). This part extends as far as the internal
stack, the part immediately to the right of the stack having been raised and
re-roofed at a later date. It was last used as a dairy. There are some
diamond-mullioned windows and evidence for others. The roof structure is
intact except at the altered end: coupled rafter roof, smoke-blackened
throughout; over the service end is a short section of queen post
construction, probably associated with the smoke gablet above. 2-cell mid C16
addition. The first floor is jettied along the whole of the facade, the right
hand end obscured by a C19 lean-to addition; the bressummer has remains of
embattled ornament. Various mostly C18 casement windows with diamond and
square-leaded panes; to either side of the doorway are inserted C17 mullion
windows, with another now blocked; on the first floor there are mortices for 2
former bracketed bow windows and at the extreme left a blocked doorway.
Cross-passage entry with boarded door. 2 C17 gabled dormers. Good C17
buttressed external stack on left hand gable end. Exposed joists to all
ground floor rooms; some exposed framing, mainly on the first floor. The
later C17 alterations included new staircases and re-roofing.
