House; and post office, with dwelling above and to rear. Early/mid C16 in 2
stages. 3-cell cross-entry plan; the cross-wing now containing the post
office was added mid C16 as a parlour block. 2 storeys. Timber-framed, on a
high plinth of red brick which is perhaps an original feature. The upper
floor is jettied towards the street; the joists are exposed and supported on
brackets, with carved buttress-shafts. At the cross-wing, two beams are
enriched with vinescroll carving. At 1st storey is a mid C20 restoration of
the C17 strapwork pargetting previously on the building. Much of the framing
is exposed at ground storey, with plaster infill panels. Plaintiled roofs
with axial and external chimneys of red brick. Various windows: at ground
storey are C18 or early C19 splayed bays on brackets, and at 1st storey small
pane casements. Several C16 openings with 4-centred arched heads are now
glazed or exposed and plastered; the mutilated cills of two oriels are
exposed, both with rose-carved spandrels. Above the post office are two
windows with moulded mullions and arched heads to each light. The Old Lodge
has a C20 half-glazed door; the post office a C19 6-panelled door, the upper
panels glazed. The wing has evidence for an external staircase at the rear.
Plain framing exposed internally; good close-studwork with tension and arch
wind-bracing, and plain crown post roofs. From the left, the building
comprised originally:-
1. A shop with a pair of arch-headed windows, and a buttery behind.
2. A 2-bay hall with chamber above.
3. A parlour which, within a few years was partitioned to give a shop with
an arched door and window at the frontage.
4. A more pretentious parlour cross-wing, added with the alterations in 3
above. It had an external arched doorway, now glazed.
