8/18 Gryffon House (formerly
-
9-12-55 listed as Crown Inn)
GV II
House, early or mid C16, with major alterations of early C18 and later. Part
of the winter house built for the Woodhouse family of Crowfield Hall (see also
Items 8/15 and8/17). 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered on a high plinth
of tarred brick. Hipped plaintiled roof with axial and rear chimneys of red
brick. The main (west) elevation has C18 windows with flush frames: 3 early
C18 small-pane sashes at 1st storey, and of late C18 below. C20 entrance door
with small panes, and another of late C18/early C19 with 6 panels on south
elevation. The C16 building contained a 2-bay hall with a service block to
right (the parlour block, now known as Old Dower House, is contemporary but
structurally independent, and is included separately as 8/15). The hall was
originally of one storey, but ceiled; the main beams have good roll-mouldings.
The walls were raised and a new roof built in C18. Some C17 wainscotting.
