5/52 The Dragon House
GV II
Former public house (closed 1966), now private dwelling. Late C16 and C17, in
several phases. Facade of c.1920. Timber framed and plastered, with early
C20 plaster panels infilled with ropework pargetting. Roof has asbestos
slates to front slope and pantiles to rear. 2 storeys and attic. A range of
3 casement windows with a single horizontal glazing bar to each light. 2
doorways: to the left a 6-panel door (the upper 2 panels glazed) and flat
bracketed hood; 4-panel door to right. The ground floor windows have
hoodmoulds, that to the right hand window continued over the adjacent doorway.
Gable stacks; a later stack in the front roof slope. Single storey
weatherboarded addition to right. l 1/2-storey rear wing. Interior somewhat
altered and original layout unclear; at some time the house has suffered fire
damage. The left end is the earliest part: there is a 2-bay ground floor room
with chamfered-joist ceiling and open fireplace. At the right end, work of
early-mid C17 is visible on the upper floor. Both the main stacks appear to
be later insertions. C17 lean-to at rear, perhaps for a stair, with a late
C17 secondary window with square mullions and diamond glazing bars exposed in
the rear wall. The roof (not fully inspected) seems to be almost entirely
rebuilt.
