about 20 yards north-east
of Penny Pit
GV
II
Barn and granary. Barn is probably C17 with substantial C18 extensions
and C19 alterations. Sandstone rubble plinth, timber-frame with some
brick and woven infill but mainly weatherboarded, pantiled roof; L-plan
with one older three-bay arm extending northwards and the other, probably
of four bays, extending westwards towards the granary. South elevation
has stable door to left of centre and two-leaved doors to right of centre;
west elevation of north arm has one panel of riven oak infill to left of
full-height ledged doors to threshing floor in the southernmost bay.
Interior has massive tie-beams to north/south range with a double tie-beam
at the southern end to provide a bearing for the roofing of the later east/
west range. Two close-set threshing floors set at right angles appear thus
to have been created. Granary: probably early C19, is sandstone rubble with
pantiled roof, three bays, two levels; south elevation has brick segmental
heads to ground floor openings, one to left and to doorway to right with two
square-headed loft openings; north elevation has stone tallet stairs leading
to upper level entry on left hand side. Interior has pegged king-post trusses.
Included for group value.
