Description

SK 81 SE BURLEY
3/10 Burley on the Hill:
Entrance gates and
gate piers
GV II*

Paired entrance gates and gate piers with flanking pedestrian gates and
outer piers. 1700, with ironwork by Joshia Lord, the gates were originally
flanked by lodges and walling, swept away by Repton. The main gate piers
are rusticated, square in section, with fluted pilasters and plain cornice
capped by griffins. The outer piers are square in section with moulded
panels and cornice capped by urns. The central pair of gates consist of
2 panels each, the lower with richly wrought foliage, the upper with
spearhead shafts and foliate borders. Over the gates a curved wrought
iron over-archrises to a monogram and coronet crowned by scrolly foliage.
The outer gates similarly consist of 2 panels, and each has a concave head,
curving up to meet the main piers.
