SK 81 SE BURLEY
3/9 Burley on the Hill:
Terrace parapet, retaining
wall and staircase
GV II*
Formal terrace on south front of house C18. Long low parapet, balustraded,
alternating with moulded stone panels, above high stone retaining wall
containing shallow arched recesses. 2 symmetrical flights of steps with
stone balustrades and sweeping stone rail rise to the central projecting
section of terrace. It may be the sole survivor of 3 tiered terraces
built by Daniel Finch, c1710, though possibly as reconstructed by Repton
who was responsible for the removal of the lower terrace, c1796.
Buckingham's house also had tiered terraces, so that this represents
a continuing of the tradition. From a distance, it acts as an important
visual base and foundation of the house.
