Cottage. Early to mid-C17 with C18 and late C19 alterations and additions.
Timber framed with plastered infill panels, partly rebuilt in uncoursed
grey sandstone rubble and red brick; plain tile roof. 2 framed bays.
Framing: square panels (3 from sole plate to wall plate) with long
straight tension braces. One storey and gable-lit attic. Integral
brick end stack to left. 2-window front; C20 small-paned wooden casements,
3-light to left and 2-light to right. Roughly central C20 stable-
type door with side-light to left. Exposed collar and tie-beam truss
with queen struts and v-struts in left-hand gable end. Probably C19
one-storey uncoursed sandstone rubble addition to left with French
casements in gable end. Interior: open fireplace with chamfered stone
reveals and chamfered wooden lintel. Square-panelled timber framed
cross walls; central collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and
v-struts; staggered purlins. It has been suggested that this cottage
might formerly have been an external kitchen block to Penkridge -Hall
(q.v.) close by.
