The Day House
II
Farmhouse, latterly three cottages. Mid to late C17 with C19 and C20
alterations and additions. Timber-framed with red brick nogging,
partly rebuilt in red brick and extended in uncoursed grey/yellow
sandstone rubble; corrugated asbestos roof. Four framed bays aligned
approximately north-east/south-west, with addition to south-west.
Framing: square panels, three from sole plate to wall plate. One storey
and attic. North-west front: four early C20 flat-topped dormers with
2-light metal casements; large integral T-plan brick end stack to
left with oversailing cap and brick ridge stack off-centre to right
(formerly integral end stack before addition). Five-window front; small
C19 and C20 wooden and metal casements; segmental-headed boarded door
to right; C19 addition to right with flat-topped dormer and sheeted-
over ground-floor window. Exposed collar and tie-beam truss in left-
hand gable end with queen struts and v-struts. Large dressed yellow/grey
sandstone blocks at base of stack. Four dormers and boarded door at
rear. INTERIOR: collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts; staggered
purlins; timber-framed cross-walls; chamfered beams with ogee stops;
large open fireplace; two staircases. Interior of C19 addition not
inspected. The C19 cottage was probably added when the C17 farmhouse
was divided.
