House. Circa 1670-80, low rear additions C18 or early C19 (RCHM
Typescript). Narrow red brick, colourwashed. Very steep high
old red tile hipped roof. A fine symmetrical 2 storeys and
attics house in the Artisan Mannerist tradition facing S with 5
cross windows and a bold projecting brick band which steps up
above the door. The windows are in recessed panels, the lower
ones with deep segmental arched heads. Internal end chimneys of
large size above the end wall eaves. 3 dormers with casement
windows. Heavy wooden mullioned and transomed windows with
uniform wooden casements with small panes. Flat hood to door
carried on carved brackets. String course on end walls at higher
level as if front made different for architectural effect. A 2
room gable chimney plan house with parlour on W and hall on E.
Original stair probably at back of central lobby. Only E chamber
on 1st floor heated originally. Front little-altered but
doorcase later. C18 rear kitchen lean-to and later stair tower
(RCHM Typescript). The name appears to date only from the early
C19: earlier references to Copt Hall are to a demolished house
at St Mary's End in the W of the parish (HLHS (1979) 33, 35). An
unusual 'Dutch' style symmetrical C17 brick house in the Artisan
Mannerist tradition of striking appearance. Centrepiece of a
varied group with Old Laundry House and adjoining buildings.
