A rare image of the full, 300-foot façade of Watford Boys' Grammar School, looking north-west from Rickmansworth Road in 1933, a time of rapid growth of the school under the firm leadership of Edward Reynolds (1922-1938). Five years before this photograph was taken, an East Wing was added to accommodate extra numbers of pupils, which now exceeded 600, thus reducing the original 1912 symmetrical plan of the main block. This addition can be seen as the final bays on the right-hand side of the building. The landscaped terraces on the south-east aspect have matured well, and the early 1800s Shepherd's Lodge and garden is on the extreme right of picture. This old relic of the Cassiobury Estate was demolished in 1954/55, but the name persists as the residential Shepherd's Road, to the east of the school.
