Startlewood Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Probably early C17, enlarged in the mid-C17. Remodelled
in the mid-to late C19. Timber framed with brick nogging on high dressed
red sandstone plinth. Partly rebuilt or refaced in red brick and dressed
red sandstone with herringbone tooling. Slate roof. Framing: (rear
wing) large square panels (2 from sole plate to wall plate) with straight
corner braces and straight tension braces. L-plan; baffle-entry plan of
3 framed bays with later one-bay wing at rear. Two storeys and attic.
South front: brick ridge stack off-centre to right and small integral brick
end stack to left. Three-window front; C19 two- and 3-light cast-iron
lattice casements with wooden surrounds and hoods. C19 gabled brick porch
off-centre to right has 6-panelled door (lower 2 panels flush) with 3-part
rectangular overlight and bracketed hood. Inserted C20 ground-floor
window to left. Gable ends with rebuilt roof trusses consisting of tie-
beams and later light framing. One-storey lean-to to left with graded
slate roof. Rear wing with roof truss consisting of tie-beam, 2 collars,
and queen struts. Interior: left-hand ground-floor room with moulded
beams and joists. C17 oak winder stair with octagonal newel post rising
from left-hand room. Timber framed former external rear wall of left-hand
bay (now internal) with diagonal struts forming lozenge patterns.
