Hotel. Early C19, with minor late C19 alterations and additions.
Red brick with slate roof. Three storeys over basement. Plinth with
chamfered stone top, dentil brick eaves cornice and parapeted gable ends
with rounded stone copings and shaped kneelers. External brick end
stacks. 4+1 bays; boxed glazing bar sashes (12- and 16-pane) with
painted stone cills and gauged-brick heads (some windows without flat
arches). Blind second-floor window in second bay from left. Left-hand
first-floor bay blank with remains of painted sign. Central late C19
brick porch with chamfered plinth, moulded-brick corners, moulded-brick
and stone cornice and pierced terracotta parapet with coping and panelled
square dies. Scalloped-brick segmental archway with keystone and segmental-headed
side windows. Central half-glazed door with 3-part
rectangular overlight and moulded frame. Steps up to porch from left and
right. Basement door to left. Two-storey wing set-back to right
with hipped roof, glazing bar sash to first floor and C20 casement to ground
floor. Right-hand return front of two bays, with glazing bar sashes. Two-
storey red sandstone wing to rear with integral brick end stack and glazing
bar sashes. Interior not inspected. The hotel was a staging post on the
Holyhead Road, improved by Thomas Telford in the 15 years after 1817.
