8/173 Nos. 58, 60,
and 62
GV II
House or inn, now 3 houses. Probably late C16, refronted in C18 and Nos.
58, and 60 refronted again in mid C19, when rear extensions were also
added to each. Timber frame exposed only in carriageway to No. 64 and
inside No. 58. Plaster front to No. 62, stucco front to Nos. 58, and 60.
Stucco at rear, and flint-and-brick rear extensions with slate roofs.
Steep old red tile roof to front range. A tall 2-storeys continuous
range of uniform height fronting the pavement, facing E, immediately to
N of No. 64 of which they probably originally formed parts as inn
buildings. No. 62 is said to have been the tack-room for the inn
stables, and has part of a gallery or 1st floor corridor at rear. E
front of Nos. 58, and 60 of stucco lined as ashlar, 5-windows long. 1st
floor has recessed sashes in plate glass. Ground floor has alteration of
similar sash window, single and triple (T:S:T:S) with vermiculated
rustication to false arches with keystones to middle 3 (T:S:T). At LH (S)
end is a small C19 shopfront, pilastered with fascia, 2-lights window,
and half-glazed door up 2 steps. At RH (N) end No. 58 has a half-glazed
flush-beaded panelled door with rectangular fanlight, and large boarded
double doors to carriageway through to rear. No. 62 retains its earlier
plastered front and the stair facing of No. 60 covers half of a 1st
floor window. 2 2-light sliding Yorkshire casements with small panes on
1st floor and the half-window at N side. 2 flush sash windows with 2/2
panes flank 6-panels half-glazed door up 2 steps under flat hood. Timber
framing and fine C17 red brickwork in English-bond exposed on S end in
carriageway to No. 64. Slated rear lean-to in brick and flint.
