Three barns and a covered gateway. Hay Barn at S early C17, Straw Barn
at N mid C17, Wood Barn in middle late C17 with Gateway to N dated 'SL
WL 1820 JC' on tie beam. Timber frame on low red brick sills, dark
weatherboarded with steep pitched roofs now covered in slates except Hay
Barn in corrugated iron. An L-shaped range of tall unaisled barns facing
into yard on W with a gateway between the middle and north barns. Straw
Barn at N of 4 bays with a gabled W porch to 2nd bay from N and opposed
double doors. Swept jowled bay posts, unjowled mid-bay posts. Long
curved braces to tie-beams. Straight inclined queen-posts to single
purlins (no collars) where principal rafter reduced in section. 2 bays
Gateway with S bay open and simple purlin roof. Wood Barn immediately to
S of gateway of 3 bays with gabled W porch to middle bay. Cyma shaped
jowls to posts, unjowled mid-bay posts in end bays, long curved braces
to tie-beams, convex curved queen-posts to support single purlin in each
slope (no collars). Simple splayed scarf joint to purlin at mid-bay.
Series of numbered joints noticeable. Hay Barn extends to W from S end
of Wood Barn and pre-dates it. 4-bays with gabled N porch to 2nd bay from
W. Jowled bay-posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, mid-height rail jointed
in-line. Long curved braces to cambered tie-beams. Single heavy purlin
to each slope. Slightly convex-curved queen-posts support purlin (no
collars). Square-butted scarf joints. Winnowing door to rear of
porch-bay. Pitching doors at rear in other 3 bays. W end internally
plastered to half height as if for storing grain.
