Description

FLAMSTEAD BEECHWOOD PARK
TL 01 SW
(West side)
3/12 Gate, piers, and steps
- at South gate to walled
garden at Beechwood Park
School
GV II

Gate, piers, and steps. C18. Wrought iron, red brick piers with stone
coping slabs, Portland stone steps and threshold. A single gate in an
iron screen between rectangular red brick piers in Flemish-bond 3M high
with simple oversailing stone capping. Stone threshold one step up from
outside extends as landing to 5 stone steps up from garden between
monolithic side-slabs level with landing. The iron screen is composed of
2 tall rectangular elaborately scrolled standards with scrolled finials.
These standards rise higher than the adjoining piers and are braced to
them by scrolled quadrants from their caps. A narrow rectangular
scrolled overthrow panel braces the standards apart a little below their
heads, and has below it the bar receiving the top pivot of the gate and
the narrow side panels. Plain bars and dog-bars in the lower panels of
each but twisted spirals above a crossrail in gate. Elaborate scrolled
work in upper parts of side panels.
