12/43 Kylix and pedestal
GV II
Kylix and pedestal on which it stands. Erected 1845. Design similar to
those on south parterre (qv), and thus probably by C H Tatham. Sandstone
pedestal, limestone kylix. Approximately 3 metres in height. Massive
pedestal with moulded base, inscribed on 2 sides with the 7th Earl of
Carlisle's prize-winning poem 'Paestum'. The other 2 sides carry the
following inscriptions:

Biferique rosaria Paesti
Virg
Tepidique rosaria Paesti
Ovid
And now a Virgil, now an Ovid sung,
Paestum's twice-blowing roses
Rogers

and:
Jussu Georgii
Sexti CC
MDCCCXLV

Bead-and-reel frieze, moulded egg-and-dart cornice. Broken fluted kylix
with foliate decoration. HBMC, Register of Parks and Gardens of special
historic interest in England, Part 32, North Yorkshire: Castle Howard,
Grade I.
