15/93 Bagpath Farmhouse and stables
II
Farmhouse with attached former stables. Early-mid C17; C18
stables. Random rubble limestone with dressed quoins; rebuilt
ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof, pantile to stables. Two-storey
with attic and cellar; L-plan. Stable range runs to east. North
front: full gable to house is offset to right with large 5-light
casement to ground floor with relieving arch, 2 and 4-light
casements to upper floor and off-centre 3-light to attic with
blocked doorway to right having timber lintel; all casements ovolo
moulded mullioned with hoodmoulds. Blocked oval in apex. Doorway
to left with hipped roof to porch on Tuscan columns; plain doorway
with heavy studded plank door. Stables to left have scattered
casement fenestration and doorways with timber lintels. One ground
floor 2-light recessed cavetto stone-mullioned casement. West
side: 2 gables, right projecting forward, both with ashlar
chimneys having 2 rebuilt diagonal shafts with moulded caps.
Central upper floor former doorway blocked in brick with C19 fixed-
light; blocked single and 2-light below. South side: gable end
of wing projects forward to left having single-window fenestration
except for two 2-light chamfered mullioned cellar casements with
combining hoodmould; 4-light to ground floor, 3-light above both
with relieving arches; 2-light to attic, all being ovolo mullioned
with hoodmoulds. Oval in apex. Plank door with 2-light above to
main part of house; 3-light recessed cavetto mullioned casement
with hoodmould to stables, leaded upper floor casement with timber
lintel. Full gable to east-facing side of wing has C20 altered
fenestration to ground and upper floors; 2-light with hood to
attic and blocked oval above.
Interior: good staircase of c1630 with slanted Ionic balusters and
openwork finials to newels. South wing contains moulded stone
fireplace to each floor with moulding stops enriched with lozenge
decoration. Small cupboard to upper floor room with turned
baluster vents in door.
