TL 8024 STISTED THE STREET
(east side)
8/286 Nos. 18 and 19
GV II
Public building, now 2 cottages. C16, altered in C19. Timber framed, roughcast
rendered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 3 bays facing NE, with inserted
stack behind ridge to right of centre. C19 rear extensions. 2 storeys.
3-window range of C20 metal casements. 2 C19 doors. Full-length jetty,
rendered over. Jowled posts. Chamfered axial and transverse beams, unstopped.
The frame is mainly concealed by plaster, but appears to have consisted
originally of one undivided space on each floor. Quality plain. Clasped purlin
roof. This is unlikely as a domestic building, and a public use is probable
originally. A guild of St. Mary is mentioned in the will of John Bolthood, 1471
(P. Morant, The History and Antiquities of the County of Essex, 1768, II, 394),
and it is possible that this was built as a guildhall. Alternatively, it may be
a post-Reformation public building of more secular use, comparable with the
Marriage Feast House at Matching. RCHM 8.
