(east side)
8/289 No. 22
GV II
Ancillary building of uncertain purpose, now incorporated in house. C17 or
earlier, extended in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with machine-made
red plain tiles. Square plan, with C18 stack in S corner. C20 extension to SE,
forming a house with entrance elevation to SW. 2 storeys. 2-window range of
C20 casements, C20 glazed door. NW elevation (to The Street), 2 C20 casements
on ground floor and one on first floor. Stack rebuilt above roof in C20. Some
exposed re-used timbers in C20 jetty. One post at each corner, tenoned and
pegged girts in each wall, tenoned and pegged studs at approximately 0.90 metre
centres. C18 inserted floor comprising an irregular beam aligned NW-SE, and
plain joists of vertical section, supported on nailed clamps. C18 wood-burning
hearth of unusual semi-circular plan. SE top plate severed for access to
remainder of upper storey. C20 roof. The original purpose of this building is
unknown, but some industrial use is most likely, such as an oast. Horizontal
lines of auger holes in the studding indicate the former presence of racks or
shelves. Shown in a map of 1823 as part of a longer range of buildings (Essex
Record Office, Q/RHi 4/39).
