Large detached dwelling, previously listed as Steps Farmhouse. Late C16 and early
C17. Rough rendered, some painted rubble on returns, stone slate roof. U-plan, but
with gabled wing, left, projecting also at back, twin gables to street, left one coped
with kneelers and with ball finial to saddle stone; two Cotswold gables to south-west
similarly coped, and back gable, coped, with stone slack. Major stack also at ridge,
left of main entrance, and on back slope of central arm. Two storeys and attic, plus
basement in left wing. In gabled end, left, small openings in plinth, to basement,
then 1-windowed, 2-5 light hollow chamfer mullioned casements with drips, and 3-light
wood casement in gable, rough ovolo mould lintol and wood drip; central recessed
block, broad 2-panelled door in wide frame; gable, right 1-windowed, wood mullioned
casements and modern wood drips, 4, 5, 4-light. Garden front (south-west), 3-windowed,
includes 5-light casements at first floor, central modern door and porch. Interior
retains many original features, but not fireplaces, except bolection-mould surround at
ground floor, main gable back, left. Stone stair to cellar, two wood spiral stairs,
including some solid treads to kitchen stair at second floor level. Some heavy timber
framing, remains of wattle and daub filling, heavy haunched roof principals. Court
cupboard from time of George II with open balustered top; salt cupboard Jacobean
doors. This was the home of the Trotman family, follers, in Elizabethan times; a
major rebuilding occurred in 1618, and much of this remains.
