Upper Knapp Farmhouse

Farmhouse. C16 and C17. Mainly squared and coursed marlstone, some rubble, stone
slate roof in process of renewal at time of survey. A large complex building,
initially L-plan plus 2-storey porch to north-east, plus gabled cross wing north-west
end. Large external stacks outer south-east end, to Knapp Lane, and on return,
south-west side, plus two gable stacks on this, garden, side. Entrance front 2½
storeys: gable, left, 2 x 2 casements under wood lintols and panel 2-light leaded
casement in gable; to left of porch in centre unit 4-light casement under 2- and
1-light; 2-light over entrance; in gable, right, 4, 3, 2-light casements from ground
floor upwards. All these wood casements, no drips. Main door in porch heavy plank in
moulded surround; outer opening has very deep plain stone lintol with drip over.
Interior: three arch-braced trusses over central space; heavy panelled screen 125 mm
wide chamfered framing to panels each 600 x 750 mm. Stone steps to cellars in
north-west parts.
Some damage has been caused to the fabric in the past because one of the roof
principals was cut through.
