House. Late C16, extended in C17, C18 and C19. Timber framed, plastered,
roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays facing NE, with axial stack in
second bay from left, C19 external stack at right end, and original wing behind
left end. Early C17 extension to left of rear wing. Late C19 extension at left
end of main range. Other extensions on all sides, producing a complex plan in
multi-occupation until c.1970. 2 storeys and attics. A flat-roofed
single-storeyed extension, formerly a shop, stands forward of the left end.
Ground floor, 4 sashes each of 15 upper lights and 2 lower lights, square bay of
casements, 2 C20 and one C19 casements. First floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 16
lights and 2 late C19 casements. One late C19 casement in gabled dormer.
4-panel door with dentilled pediment. Grouped diagonal shafts. The interior of
the original building has jowled posts, some exposed close studding, a moulded
axial beam with step stops in the left bay, a chamfered axial beam with lamb's
tongue stops to the right of the stack, plain joists of horizontal section,
face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates, chamfered beams with lamb's
tongue stops above the first floor, and a clasped purlin roof with arched wind
bracing. Large wood-burning hearth facing left, cement rendered, another facing
right reduced for C20 grate. Blocked original window in left wall of rear wing,
now inside early C17 extension. The walls of the rear wing have been raised
approx. one metre, and the first floor has been raised also. The present owner
has no name for the house.
