House. Early C16, extended in C18 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red clay tiles. Continuous jetty house of 4 bays facing S, with
axial stack one bay from right end, C18/C19 stack at left end. C18 extension
with gambrel roof to rear of right bay. 2 C20 extensions with flat roofs to
rear of remainder. 2 storeys. 3-window range of mid-C19 sashes of 6 lights.
C20 door and shop window in right bay. 4 C19 scrolled brackets below jetty.
Chapel Cottage encloses the right side and the right front corner, including one
original plain bracket below the jetty. Wrought iron lantern bracket with
scrolls, adapted to support shop sign. Recessed panels in chimney. Jowled
posts, half-height jowls on rear posts, chamfered with step stops. Chamfered
binding beams with step stops, axial beams unstopped. Close studding with
curved braces trenched to the outside, exposed in Chapel Cottage. Blocked
doorway with 4-centred head between right bay and the next. Large wood-burning
hearth facing left, reduced for C20 grate. Hearth facing right with depressed
arch of plastered brick, plaster guilloche design above, chamfered jambs with
5-leafed plant in plaster, c.1600. On first floor, blocked unglazed window at
right end, and diamond mortices for unglazed windows at front. Chamfered
tiebeams with step stops, arched braces, clasped purlin roof with arched
wind-bracing. RCHM 13.
