2/19 The Swan Inn
GV II
House, now public house. C16 or earlier, altered in early C19 and C20. Partly
timber framed and plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles, partly of red
brick in Flemish bond, roofed with slate. Complex plan comprising 2 bays of a
late medieval house aligned approx. E-W, with extension to S of W bay. C18/19
single-storey extension to W, with internal end stack. Lean-to extension with
internal stack in NW angle. Early C19 brick extension N and E of E bay of
original house, with internal stack. C20 single-storey extensions to W and SW.
2 storeys. E elevation, 2-window range of early C19 sashes of 16 lights with
shallow segmental arches. Central doorway with similar arch, blocked, and
original window aperture above, also blocked. Hipped slate roof of shallow
pitch. The N elevation is similar, but the 2 right sashes have been altered
within the original apertures, and there is one early C19 sash of 12 lights in
the lean-to extension. Entrance now in C20 extension to W. The original
building has a fully jointed and pegged frame with heavy close studding, and an
early C17 inserted floor comprising a chamfered transverse beam and plain joists
of vertical section. A section of original wattle and daub infill is exposed at
the E end, within the early C19 brick extension. The W roof pitch, and the E
pitch of the S extension, are tiled and of normal tile pitch.
