2/18 The Cottage and Ripstowe

GV II

House, extended to form 2 cottages. Late C16/early cL7, extended in C18 and
C20. Timber framed, mainly plastered, partly faced with painted brick, roofed
with handmade red plain tiles. Main range facing S with internal stack against
front wall, extended to right with internal C18/19 stack behind ridge, and C20
single-storey extension beyond, roofed with red interlocking tiles. C17
crosswing at left end, with C20 external stack to left of rear bay. Rear
extensions. The Cottage (left) has one early C20 splayed bay, one early C20
casement, and 2 more on the upper floor, one of which is in a hipped dormer; C20
half-glazed door. Ripstowe (right) has 3 C20 casements and 2 more in gabled
dormers, and a C20 half-glazed door, and a fully glazed door in the right
extension. The main range of The Cottage has a wide wood-burning hearth facing
to left, reduced for a C20 grate, a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue
stops, and plain joists of horizontal section. The crosswing has transverse
joists of vertical section, and in the left wall of the front bay the mantel
beam of a demolished external stack. Upper floor not inspected. Ripstowe has
heavy studding at the front, a face-halved and bladed scarf in the rear
wallplate, and primary straight bracing. RCHM (Pattiswick) 10.
