House. Dated 1691 and 1723, possibly-for the Symondson family. Coursed
limestone rubble, graduated stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 bays. Quoins.
Central glazed 6-panel door in chamfered surround, arched date plaque over
with raised lettering; " S " . A flat stone hood on brackets above.
I S
1725
Recessed chamfered mullion windows of 4 lights to ground and first floor,
those to ground floor having king mullions and hood moulds. Shaped
kneelers, gable copings, end corniced stacks. Rear: a central inserted
doorway; the original blocked doorway, now a window, is to the right, the
lintel with raised letters " I M 1691". Recessed chamfered windows, the
stair window left of centre has a mullion and transom. Interior: a large
segmental-arched fireplace to ground floor, left, the arch composed of a
keystone and 2 flanking stones incised as voussoirs; the jambs are carved
with 2 fielded panels and the oven on right side now opens into the rear
kitchen. The house was built as a direct-entry plan, the living room having
an inserted partition creating a narrow entrance passage, probably early in
the C19. The house may have been built by a member of the Symondson family
who were prominent in,the area in the C17, but the present owners have
family links with the Tennants.
