Millbank Farmhouse and
attached outbuilding

- II
Farmhouse and outbuilding. 2 builds. Outbuilding and downhouse probably
early-mid C18, main house part rebuilt or refronted later C18. Coursed herring-
bone-tooled sandstone, the low end larger sized. Pantiled roof to low end,
Welsh slate to upper end, both with stone ridge, copings and kneelers; stone and
brick chimneys. Hearth-passage plan. 1½ storeys, 2 bays each part, the main
house wider, the downhouse lower. Entrance in boarded passage door at right of
downhouse; modern small casement to left on each floor. Outbuilding beyond has
2 doorways but doors now run together as a 3-leaf garage entrance; small hit-
and-miss window on left; boarded loading door above. House front largely
concealed by dairy lean-to, probably C19 but reusing old stones. Rear elevation
shows Yorkshire sash in downhouse to right and row of slit vents under eaves
farther right. Main house has 2 small modern casements on each floor.
Interior: house-place retains heck and settle but fireplace modern. House and
parlour, now run together, have big close-set chamfered full-width joists.
Stairs through door behind parlour. Former downhouse/dairy, now kitchen, has
subsidiary stair to bedroom not accessible to main house. Modern rear porch is
not of interest.
