Farsyde House
11*
House, C16 and C17 with alterations. Coursed roughly-tooled sandstone; pantiled
roofs with stone ridges, copings, kneelers and stacks. T-plan house facing
west, with massive external stack at north end. Small entrance extension dated
1670 extruded from northern angle of T. Refronting of main house may date from
this period. On lintel with date are 3 sets of initials of the Farsyde family
whose seat this was: W & VF, IF, E & MF. Main west front 2 storeys and attic, 3
bays, slightly irregular. (Chamfered plinth). No entrance on this front, but
stone-mullioned windows with glazing-bar casements, 2-, 3- and 4-light (except
for top right window lost mullion, with Yorkshire sash). Roof, rebuilt probably
early C19 has 3-light modern dormer. Broad copings on high, rolled kneelers;
small stack at right, massive external stack at left. Rear elevation has a 16-
pane sash at left, but other openings are chamfered and stone-mullioned. Traces
of older blocked window remain. The entrance extension has a blocked ovolo-
moulded window under hoodmould, a 9-pane window in extended opening and a small
casement in original opening above. Door, with inscribed lintel, within C20
glazed porch. Interior shows ovolo-moulded beams and joists, possibly part of
the C17 refurbishment. In the chimney bay a broad-chamfered beam. Fireplace
panelled around; panelled partitions and big internal window shutters. Closed-
string early C18 staircase. The C20 porch is not of special interest. The out-
buildings altered to cottages are not of special interest.
