II
Barn, now shop. Mid C17 with C18 alterations and late C20 conversion.
Gritstone rubble, graduated stone slate roof. Quoins. 3 bays, the central
entrance bay projects and has a catslide roof. Left bay: former byre door
with chamfered quoined jambs tied into corner stones on left, large flat
lintel and weathered date plaque above. 2 tiers of 2 and 3 vents with
round heads to right and above. Central bay: quoined jambs to cart porch,
the lintel raised and a wooden beam inserted, probably in the C18. To
right a chamfered slit vent and 3 rows of pigeon holes with stone ledge
perches. The inner entrance is glazed but double board doors remain.
Right bay: single stone jambs and slight lintel to board door, right;
similar surround to loading door above. Gable copings. In 1780 and 1782
John Wesley stopped to preach at Grassington on his way between Skipton and
Pateley Bridge. His diary records the event and local memory associates
this barn with it. In the C19 the Pletts family of farmers and cabinet
makers used the building. S. Brooks, A History of Grassington 1979, p49.
