Farmhouse. Mid C17, reroofed mid-late C19. Coursed gritstone, grey slate
roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays with 2-storey porch between bays 1 and 2 and an
added bay to left. Quoins. Porch: board door in chamfered quoined
surround, the lintel arch possibly recut. Recessed chamfered mullion
windows throughout of 3 (mullions repositioned), 5 and 5 lights to ground
floor under a continuous dripmould; and of 4, 3 with hoodmould (to porch),
4 and 4 lights to first floor. Gable coping right; ridge stack above porch
and to each end. Eaves decorated with plaster and pebbles. Added bay to
left: C20 double doors, square loading door above gable coping left. Left
return: blocked small chamfered opening to ground floor, blocked arch to
gable. Interior of house not inspected at resurvey but reported to contain
an arched fireplace. The house is one of those built within 2 generations
of the sale of freeholds in the village by the Earl of Cumberland, George
Clifford in 1604. The left bay may be a contemporary farm building but
quoins define the original house. The decorated band below the eaves, with
chevron and semicircle motifs, is an unusual feature and probably dates
from the reroofing. Formerly known as Rathmell's farm, it belongs to the
Trustees of the Fountaine Hospital in Linton. I. Goldthorpe, One Hundred
