Hall) (formerly listed

GV II*
House, c 1686, now in 2 occupations. Rubble with stone slate roof. Nearly square
on plan, with ridge of roof running north-south but large gabled dormers on each
side giving a cruciform appearance. Two storeys with large attic. Many double
chamfered stone mullion windows, mostly of 2 lights to the upper floors (which
lack mullions). To north side there is a 10-light mullion and transom window
to ground floor left and the scars of what may have been a near-central doorway.
A C19 doorway stands to the right. The south front has a similar window to ground
floor left, slightly damaged by the insertion of another door at the corner, and
another to first floor right. Very large axial stack.
Interior: Subdivided perhaps in C19, the house probably had a lobby entry on
the north side to housebody and parlour either side of the stack, with another
room beyond each of these. The housebody or main room has an arched fireplace
flanked by two round headed doorways, each of which now leads to a cupboard.
One of these cupboards is probably the former lobby. The parlour fireplace is
rather smaller, round headed with a stopped chamfer. The rest of the house was
not inspected.
Christopher Trapps of Nidd married into a Carleton family in 1686. A substantial
house on a version of a double-pile plan. (NYCVBSG Report).
