SOWTON BISHOP'S CLYST
SX 98 SE
1/34 No. 28 (formerly listed under
- Clyst St Mary)
18.11.76
- II
Cottage forming part of a row. C19 remodelling of an earlier house. Plastered cob
on stone footings; pantiled roof. Although possibly originally part of a larger
house, it is now a single unit cottage, with the principal room to the right of the
entrance and stair hall. 2 storeys.
Front: one window range; full gabled dormer, tile-hung with late-C20 2-light
casement; C20 2-light casement window to first floor. Ground floor with an round-
headed doorway with moulded tympanum to the left, and a pretty Gothick 2-light
casement window to the right, the glazing bars forming 2 arches with margin panes.
The cottage groups well with, and was remodelled at the same time as, No. 29 and
Myrtle Cottage (q.v.).
Interior not inspected. The cottage is mentioned briefly in N W Alcock, 'Houses
in an East Devon Parish', Trans. Devon Assoc., 94 (1962), p.212.
