SOWTON BISHOP'S CLYST

1/32 The Maltster's Anns

- II
Public house. Possibly early C16, but much altered and enlarged in the C18, C19
and C20. Plastered cob on stone footings, with much brickwork to rear; gabled-end
slate roofs. The front block lies parallel to the village street and is a 2-room,
through-passage plan house, now with a bar to either side of the entrance, the
left-hand room heated by an external rear lateral stack with an C18 brick shaft;
there is a wing to the rear of the right-hand room. 2 storeys.
Front: 3-window range; shaped eaves brackets; hornless sash windows to 1st floor
with 3 upper and 6 lower panes; central doorway under moulded canopy on console
brackets approached by 3 steps with simple C19 iron railings; panelled door. To
the left a 3-light casement window, to the right a window bay with rounded corners,
with a 1:3:1 pane C20 casement, and a moulded cornice. Rear wing with 12 and 16-
pane hornless sash windows.
Interior: roof (not inspected); Dr Alcock describes it as of arched brace
construction, the braces deeply chamfered, the trusses about 5'6" apart; it
resembles the roof of the stable block at Bishop's Court (q.v.) this could indicate
that the front range was originally a barn until its conversion to accommodation in
circa 1700.
