13/126 Barmskin Hall Farmhouse

- II
Farmhouse, now house. Probably late C16 or early C17, remodelled in C18 or
C19. Coursed squared sandstone, larger and less regular at ground floor
which has large quoins, upper half of right gable rendered and scored;
slate roof with brick chimney at left gable. Double-depth 2-bay plan with
continuous rear outshut. Two storeys (possibly raised from one or li),
symmetrical; in the centre a 4-centred arched doorway in massive stone
surround with deep chamfer stopped at the feet of the jambs with modified
jewelled stops (resembling those on internal doorways at Heskin Hall,
q.v.), over the head of the door a worn datestone with raised decoration
and lettering, now illegible; two Cl9 windows on each floor. Right return
wall has a deeply-recessed mullioned window of 4 lights with a hoodmould,
now blocked. Left gable wall and rear of less interest, except for a
chimney stack rising from the rear wall of the 2nd bay (now covered by
additions). Interior: remodelled, but 2nd bay has a 2 chamfered beams, set
laterally. History: not known, but perhaps had timber-framed upper
storey.
