6/177 Fur Lane Farmhouse
- and Cottage
- II
House and cottage. Said to date from 1645 but largely of mid
and late C18 and early C19. Hammer-dressed watershot stone,
dressed stone and squared rubble with graduated stone slate
roof. The 2-bay double-depth Farmhouse was built in front
of the 2-bay single-depth Cottage forming an L-shape. Both
are of 3 storeys. The cottage has stone quoins, shaped eaves
gutter brackets and coped gables with kneelers. The ground
floor windows have 5 and 2-light double-chamfered cavetto-
moulded mullions whereas the upper floors which are of a
later date have 7, 3 and a 13-light recessed flat-faced
stone mullion windows with king mullions. The rear has a
similar workshop window, a 4-light double-chamfered window
and shows signs of various periods of construction. C20
garage against gable. The farmhouse has 3 and 5-light
cavetto-moulded recessed chamfered mullion windows and again
shows signs of being heightened to form the second floor
workshop with 13-light window (4 of which are blocked). 1,
2, 3 and 4-light windows to gables and entrance in right
gable. Coped gables with kneelers and gable chimney stacks
with oversailing courses. Bulletin of the Saddleworth
Historical Society, Vol.1, No.3, 1971.
