House. C16 and C17 but largely rebuilt in C18 and early C19.
English garden wall bond brick (now painted) with slate
roof. H-shaped 2-storey plan with large C19 wing added to
rear left. Projecting stone plinth reused from earlier
building. Continuous first floor brick band. Symmetrical
elevation with 4 bays and central entrance which has fluted
Ionic columns and a flat hood. The gabled crosswings in bays
1 and 4 are hidden behind a stepped C19 parapet. The most
unusual feature is the Colonial-style loggia created in C19
between the crosswings by supporting a bold parapet on 2-
storey high cast-iron fluted Ionic columns, a feature which
reappears at the rear. Out of the 4 windows on each floor
only 1 retains a 16-pane sash, others have segmental or flat
brick arches or stone lintels. 4 C20 bow windows to right.
Interior: chamfered beams some with stepped stops. Vaulted
cellar. 6-panel doors. Staircase with double-square newels
with sunk panels and cappings, massive moulded handrail and
turned balusters on closed string. Moated site, the history
of which goes back much longer than the present structure.
The earlier building was owned by the Canons of Cockersand.
